Flame Lore

The world in AFD runs on the Anime Magic of Flames, a pure manifestation of the will to live. In KHR canon, they don't follow rigid rules beyond Rule Of Cool, but in AFD, they're very structured and steeped in the world's culture.

Auras

Aura is a force that comes in seven aspects, and its influence terraformed the planet eons ago. Aura makes up all of the world’s atmosphere, and it is coating every atom of creation within the vicinity of Earth.

The modern European awareness of the different Aura classes are as follows:
Sky
God's Aura
Orange/Gold
Sun
Saint's Aura
Yellow
Cloud
Emperor's Aura
Purple/Violet
Storm
Warrior's Aura
Red
Lightning
Smith's Aura
Green
Rain
Sage's Aura
Blue/Teal
Mist
Mystic's Aura/Aura of the Dead
Indigo/White
In humans, Aura is manifested and controlled through the prefrontal cortex, though Mystics are known to use their entire brain. Personality has a strong influence over Aura purity, and output levels can be stretched while a young mind is still developing. Adults have significantly more control than children, but if they hadn’t stretched the amount of Aura they could put out while they were still young, they usually have less of it to go around. The most common usage of Aura is a general projection of self, AKA Killing Intent and Charisma.

Expanding your Aura capacity involved rigorous training, constant stress, and a dedication to the craft. Training can last well over 20 years.

Aura occasionally resonates through some humans more heavily than others. This is called an Aura Halo. People with Aura Halos don’t have to bother with training; they have insane amounts of Aura Just Because. Aura Halos are frequently genetic, and they’re prone to skipping generations. Symptoms of an Aura Halo include;

  • Escalated development speed of the prefrontal cortex
  • Drastic improvement rate in single sense, skill, or body part being focused on (primarily language or memory, sight, or hearing)
  • Dramatic personality
  • Obsessive focus on skill, sense, or body part
  • Pronounced presence (radiating moods, intimidating atmosphere, extremely charismatic, etc)
  • Occasional random manifestations, like a Sage that makes everyone around them sleepy
  • Intense amount of willpower, usually under pressure

People with an Aura Halo, under training and intense stress, will often just manifest all by themselves. Manifestation being…

Aura Manifestations (Dying Will Flames)

First regularly controlled and weaponized as an energy form by the Vongola, but prevalent throughout history, an Aura Manifestation is when Aura becomes so intense that it starts giving off energy. This energy is highly manipulable, and drawn from both the Aura user’s body and the atmosphere around them. The weather comparisons were used to describe the Vongola First Gen, but were very apt descriptions of Flames themselves.

Because Aura Manifestations are so rare and usually dependent on pre-existing Aura Halos, Dying Will Flames are almost entirely unknown. Not even big-name mafia families really know much about it early on. Everybody knows about Aura, though! Not quite by name, since they have so many names, but if you give someone a colour and say ‘Aura’ they’ll know what you’re talking about.

Flames have the following effects:
Sky
Pure, raw energy, highly malleable, the closest to real, actual, literal fire, and resonates with all other Aura types.
Sun
Activation, encouraging growth, revitalization, and also, just pure raw power, much like a Sky, though more projecting energy than Literal Fire.
Cloud
Propagation, expansion, echoing, enroachment, transfer of energy. The most diverse, and the most irregular output. Unlike Skies or Suns, you can’t project pure energy efficiently; it’s just too unstable.
Storm
Degradation, destruction, separation, destabilization. Much like Cloud Flames, they’re very irregular, and far too wild to contain, but they’re more stable.
Lightning
Reinforcement, sealing, bonding, full power blasting. The Sticky Flame. It’s the hardest Flame to control, because it’s so irregular and high-powered, and often has destructive capabilities on par with Storm Flames when let loose. On the other hand, it’s the Flame that works best internally.
Rain
Meditation, slowing, calming, heaviness, security, barriers. Rain Flames are ludicrously dense, and with enough concentrated output, can actually manifest into physical form. Rain Flames are slow, languid, and best output in short bursts. This one is actually very common among priests of many religions, most notably Buddhism and Shintoism.
Mist
Illusions, atmosphere. Mist Flames are so light that there is barely any difference between them and Mystic Aura. Illusions are the act of projecting onto the Aura in the atmosphere, while Mist Flames are an enhanced layered cobweb of energy, enhancing until it can even simulate solid objects like a barrier, human organs. Some illusionists use Mist Flames to simply amplify their powers, using it to mess with the Mystic Aura in another person’s head, which can do physical damage under a high enough concentration.
You can also generate Killing Intent with Flames, but it's extremely taxing, ridiculously hard to pull off, and more than likely to drive your target completely feral. Don't do this unless you're confident the person you're doing it to isn't going to like...stab you repeatedly in the head, or something. Gosh, that would be terrible.

Flame Production Types

Not everyone manifests their Flames the same way! When an Aura hits a certain point, it should be a controlled output, but some people just manifest in their own way. There are three Production Types;
Internal
The Flames manifest internally only. This is caused by the user exclusively using their own body’s Aura. Internal emmitters have smaller pools of Aura and have a harder time producing Flames.
External
The Flames are naturally emitted. This is caused by the user using all Aura available to them. Most people are External emmitters.
Projecting
The Flames influence something outside of the user, primarily other users. This is caused by the user gathering Aura from the atmosphere rather than their own body. Two Projectors of the same type may experience their Flames interacting with each other.

For example, an Internal Rain would be constantly calm, and absorb shock they receive. Because Rain Flames are so incredibly dense, most Rains are like this. An External Rain would be projecting a visible Flame, which spreads its effects. A Projecting Rain would create a barrier, or perhaps increase the density of an area to figuratively ‘slow down time’.
Another example, for Lightning; an Internal Lightning is rare as hell, and their body would be reinforced, more solid the more Flames they produce. This could mean their skin would be too hard to damage with ease, or maybe their body is as solid as diamond, so their bones don’t break. External lightning is normal emissions, bursts of violent electricity, and Flames scattering over surfaces to reinforce them. Projecting Lightning would be to just straight-up yank actual lightning from the sky, for any number of purposes.

Aura Status Effects

The status of your Aura can vary greatly! They work like so:

Primary
Just someone's Aura aspect. Everyone has one of these.
Secondary
Any Aura someone can manifest that isn't their Primary. Usually stops at three.
Inert
A Flame that someone has, but can't control. This is almost always a junked Flame. Tends to sort itself out in 1-4 years with constant Flame usage. If it's their Primary, they have to be trained out of it.
Latent
A Secondary Flame that affects how their Primary behaves, but can't manifest by itself.
Civilian Primary Auras are also considered Latent, since they can't use them.
Mixed
A Latent Flame that gets over that pesky 'can't manifest by itself' issue by manifesting alongside the Primary. No one can do this, right?? This is ridiculous.
Sealed
Smothering. A barrier is maintained around someone's Aura to block the ability to manifest into Flames. Normally collapses, unless you have some way to freeze it in place...
Reversed
A condition where someone's Flames are out of resonance with the entire planet, and subsequently behave really weirdly when exposed to the atmosphere. Most people who experience this are rendered comatose, but it's a temporary condition that will sort itself out over time. Usually happens as a result of badly sealing someone with a significantly weaker Flame than the sealer. The only two people to have their Flames reversed and remained awake to keep using them are currently the Vindice (Night) and Sawada Tsunayoshi (Ash). The behaviour of the reversed Flames varies wildly depending on their original aspect.

Harmonizing

Yeah, harmonizing happens. In a group of seven, with one of each Aura type, everyone creates a little micro-atmosphere around them, and their Flames start sticking together a bit. The more powerful the Sky, the more powerful the effect. Members of a fully resonated septet can call upon their Flames easier, can locate other members of the septet by instinct, can recognize other members of the Septet by how their Flames feel alone, and have a constant leech of Flames that creates a nice backup pool of energy, making the realized septet bugnuts impossible to kill. You’d have to start with the Sky to even consider trying.

This is caused by the energy cycling evenly through the spectrum. You could probably get the exact same effect with a bunch of the same aspect, but...why.

Junking

Each Sky Flame has a 'pitch'. Most of them are in roughly the same ballpark, but even if they're radically different, it doesn't matter; no one's Flames interact enough for it to be even slightly noticable.

Unless you're a Projector that exclusively handles the Flames in the atmosphere, in which case, existence is falling apart!!!!

Well, it feels that way, but it's completely harmless, and doesn't cause anything more dangerous than a headache. Still, making the fabric of reality do a shimmy and giving everyone a migraine is incredible unpleasant, so the Skys in question will either agree on a frequency to settle in on and coax the outlier into a less headsplitting pitch, or try to junk their Flame, which is something akin to cutting someone's arm off when it gets dislocated and giving them a functional prosthetic replacement. You could have just popped it back in, what the hell are you doing.

This can happen to the atmosphere-centric Mists, too, but they'd both have to be extremely powerful; Mist Flames aren't dense enough to cause a reaction like this.

Anti-Trinisette

EVERYONE GETS JUNKED! This is an artificially-produced field created by finding a frequency no one uses for every Flame. Junking is meaningless for most Flame aspects and the process is meaningless to Skys, but for Acrobaleno, who need to extract Flames from the atmosphere to live...

Wicks

A Wick is a street name for a Flame conduit. Mafia families who are actually aware of Flames and how they work call them Funnels, Conduits, Equipment, or Heirlooms. Flames can be produced through Wicks instantaneously and with near-perfect control. Wicks are almost always jewelry.

The reason they’re usually jewelry is because Wicks are created from large amounts of Aura cycling through them over an extended period of time, and the only way to get that effect at length is if someone were to constantly emit Aura or Flames on or near it. Rings are infinite in this regard. Extremely powerful, high-emission Wicks are usually heirlooms passed down from person to person with the same Aura aspect, hence the 'Heirloom' nickname.

Hallowed Ground

Sometimes, an entire area of land can become a Wick. This requires constant, continuous projection over an extended period of time, so meditation areas, places of prayer, and battlegrounds often take on this characteristic. The less variety in Aura aspects that project upon the land, the more Hallowed it becomes. Unlike Wicks, which are dense hyper-reactive conduits, Hallowed Ground just increases the intensity of an Aura’s influence, and makes producing Flames much easier.
